Year 1 Poetry Incursion

21 Sep 2017

Cam Semmen with some Year 1 students sharing his knowledge of poetry writing.
Cam Semmen with some Year 1 students sharing his knowledge of poetry writing.

Year One had a special visit from Cameron Semmens.

Cam Semmens is an Australian poet who visits schools and inspires students to write and perform poetry. Throughout the day we learnt how to write and perform different kinds of poems.

We had so much fun becoming poets and performing our poems to our friends. The most important thing we heave learnt throughout the day was:

Poetry is the best words in the best order.

Cameron Semmens

This morning we celebrated a very special group of students at our traditional 'Student of the Term' Assembly (Principal's award), followed by a lovely morning tea with Mr Calabria and Mr Cauchi. Each of these students was chosen by their teachers for their consistent effort, kindness, and positive attitude throughout the term. It was a joy to acknowledge and celebrate their dedication- we are so proud of them!

On Monday, four of our Year 5 FIAT students, Cooper, Ashton, Emma and Lucy, attended the CSPD launch of Socktober at St John XXIII Catholic College. They learnt that this year’s Catholic Mission Socktober aims to raise awareness and money for communities in Zambia. The students attended a liturgy for World Mission Month 2025. Our Catholic Mission theme this year is “Missionaries of Hope: Among All Peoples”. They learnt how precious maize (corn) and water are to the people of Zambia and prayed for those who walk alongside the rural communities as they learn to be self-sufficient. The students reflected on the 5 basic needs to have a full life and how fortunate we are to have all of these. The rest of the Faith in Action team looks forward to learning from these student representatives and then hosting our Socktober events in Week 2 next term.

Year 1 had a fantastic time on Friday working on a special design and make project where they created their very own park designs. This exciting task linked beautifully to their Geography unit on the features of places, helping them apply their learning in a creative and practical way. After designing, students wrote speeches to explain their ideas and will be presenting them to the class on Monday. We are very much looking forward to welcoming parents into the classroom on Monday afternoon to showcase the students’ wonderful work and celebrate their achievements together

Today, our Kindergarten students shone brightly at assembly, sharing their learning with smiles and creativity. In Religion, they reminded us of the importance of loving one another through a beautiful song. Their Reader’s Theatre performance of 'Dear Farm' brought narratives to life, showing just how far their reading and storytelling skills have come. We were also treated to an amazing display of farm-themed artwork and another song about their knowledge of living things. A huge thank you to our dedicated teachers for guiding these young learners. It's hard to believe they only started school 8 months ago and have already made so much growth in their learning. Thank you also to the parents who joined us in celebrating their achievements- your support makes these moments very special!

Today, our school was filled with courage, confidence, and powerful voices as students took part in the Voices of OLA Public Speaking Competition finals. After weeks of preparing, practicing, and presenting to their peers and teachers, two students from each class in Years 1-5 were selected to represent in today’s final round. We are so proud of every student who participated- your use of gestures, eye contact, thoughtful questions, and audience engagement was outstanding. Public speaking is not easy, and you’ve all achieved something truly special. A huge congratulations to our grade champions from Years 1-6: Allira, Eli, Charlotte, Archer, and Lihini- what an incredible effort! Well done also to our Kindergarten class winners- Shaun, Katarina, and Sophia, who presented in front of their classmates and teachers. Thank you to our families who came to support the students today and to Mrs Kennedy, our Literacy Coordinator, for guiding and inspiring our young speakers. Well done, OLA!!
