Kindergarten's First Few Weeks of Big School

21 Sep 2017

Boys playing with lego and having fun building.

Kindergarten have had a great start to their first weeks of school.

Some of the activities we have been doing include reading stories, making numbers with counters and learning some new prayers. Kindergarten students have enjoyed meeting new friends and their teachers.

We are looking forward to watching the students grow and learn throughout the year and all those beyond while at OLA. We welcome all the new families into our wonderful school community.

Here are the thoughts of two kindergarten students about what they have enjoyed about their first week.

I liked to play with the Lego.

Roko

I had fun drawing and cutting.

These girls are enjoying their activity of drawing and cutting out.

To finish off our big week of excursions, Year 1 visited the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah on Friday, as part of their Geography unit ‘Features of Places’. Students investigated the human and natural features of the Garden, such as buildings, playgrounds, garden beds, lakes, and ponds. They observed how people use the Garden in different ways and created simple maps to identify its features. They also learnt about caring for local wildlife and how people can be caretakers of their environment. A huge thank you to our fabulous Year 1 teachers and parent helpers for making this rich learning experience possible!

Our next group to head out on an excursion this week was Year 4, who travelled to the city on Wednesday to visit the Australian National Maritime Museum. Students explored Australia’s rich maritime history, learning about early exploration, migration, and the important role ships played in shaping our nation. They went on the HMS Endeavour, the boat Captain James Cook was on when he discovered Australia. They also walked around the museum and went on the Vampire- an Australian warship! It was an exciting and memorable experience that deepened their understanding of early exploration and James Cook. Thank you to the wonderful Year 4 teachers for organising it and the parents who assisted on the day!

This week has been a busy one for excursions at OLA! First up, our Year 2 students visited the Australiana Pioneer Village at Wilberforce on Tuesday. They stepped back in time and discovered what life was like in the past. They tried out the old water pump, tasted freshly made damper, and even had a lesson in an old-fashioned classroom. They also enjoyed a tractor ride to see the farm animals and explored fascinating places such as the blacksmith’s workshop, the wash house, cottages, post office and police station. A big thank you to our dedicated teachers for organising the day and to our parent helpers for assisting!

Today our Year 3–6 students were lucky to have a visit from author Andrew McDonald- what a fantastic way to wrap up our Book Week celebrations! Andrew kept us entertained as he shared his journey to becoming an author, what inspires his writing, and the process behind creating his stories. Together, we even had the chance to plan a story with him! There were plenty of smiles, laughter, and lots of inspiration- a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of books and reading!

Today our Voice of Youth representatives, Lily and Jai, took part against three other schools in the Cluster Final at John XXIII, Stanhope Gardens. We are so proud of both students, who represented OLA with pride, confidence and passion. Our Year 6 students were a wonderful audience, and we sincerely thank Mr Calabria, Mr Cauchi, our Year 6 teachers, and the families who came along to support. We are very excited to announce that Jai was the overall winner of today’s final and will now progress to the next round! An extra special moment, as Jai follows in the footsteps of his big sister, who also won her Cluster Final when she was in Year 6 at OLA. Congratulations, Jai- what an incredible achievement!

Today our school leaders, Mason, Olivia, Max and Jenessa, had the honour of attending the Education Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, together with Mr Calabria, Miss Grima, Mrs Falzon, and Mrs Suarez. The Mass, celebrated by Bishop Vincent Long, was a wonderful opportunity to come together in prayer with students and staff from schools across the Diocese, giving thanks for the gift of Catholic education and the mission we share.

Congratulations to all our Year 6 students who presented their Voice of Youth speeches over the past few weeks! The effort, preparation and confidence on display was outstanding, and the variety of topics made for such an enjoyable event. Nine finalists were chosen, and these students participated in the OLA final last week. From our nine talented finalists, two students have now been selected to represent OLA at the Schofields Cluster Final at St John XXIII, Stanhope Gardens, this Thursday. Congratulations to Jai and Lily on winning the OLA final and moving forward to the Cluster Final! We are so proud of you both and wish you all the best! A big thank you to our families for coming along to support the finalists, and to the Year 6 teachers for preparing the students so well.
