OLA brings a little more dignity into the art of giving!

20 Dec 2018

Dignity1

Students and staff at Our Lady of the Angels (OLA) Kellyville have chosen to try and epitomise the word ‘Dignity’ in their mission to reach out to others in need this festive season.

Reflecting on it’s meaning, dignity, the state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect, OLA Principal Eva La Rocca said their school community has made `Dignity Packs’ for a variety of local outreach programs.

“It is important for us to teach children about the gift of giving and understand that things we take for granted are things that people in our community desperately need. We want to show the face of God, but also show others that they are the face of God and that someone loves them," Mrs La Rocca said.

OLA Religious Education Coordinator/Classroom Teacher Katrina Byrne said the school community was inspired to do the packs after a staff formation day was held in Elizabeth Bay learning about the issue of homelessness. She said it was during their tours of the Soup Kitchen and Wayside Chapel, that staff were drawn to do something to help those in need.

“It was also brought to our attention of the way people on the streets are treated and their need for basic needs. It opened the eyes of the staff and the importance of the dignity of the human person," Mrs Byrne said.

It was then they decided to pack dignity bags for the It’s in the bag organisation, along with St Canice shelter at Elizabeth Bay and three hubs of St Vincent de Paul. Up to 200 bags were packed with toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, soap, deodorant, hair products, sanitary items and a special treat.

“This initiative was extremely successful because it was more than just providing items. It was integrated with the mission units and many teachers used their experiences to educate the children and in response the students displayed empathy for those in need and a real drive to help others and show them they are the face of God, just as the students can show the face of God," Mrs Byrne said.

This school community project saw the parish and school join forces and achieve a fantastic result!

“I feel extremely proud of our community and the way everyone supported one another to create dignity packs for a purpose, really thinking about the person each bag was being packed for. We would definitely do this again," Mrs Byrne said.

Tomorrow, many of our amazing Primary students will be participating in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, and we are so proud of each and every one of them. This competition gives students a chance to shine, challenge themselves, and celebrate their love of words. We can’t wait to find out our Class Champions, our Overall School Champion, and who will progress to the state and national levels- an exciting extension pathway for our high‑achieving spellers. Wishing all of our super spellers the very best for tomorrow!

Yesterday our Kinder students celebrated 100 days of school- 100 days of faith, fun, and learning together at OLA! The day was filled with creative activities based around the number 100- counting, building, crafting, and laughing their way through this special milestone. We have loved watching our littlest learners grow in confidence, curiosity, and friendship. A huge thank you to our amazing Kinder teachers for planning such a joyful celebration, and to our wonderful parent helpers for their support throughout the day. We are so proud of the littlest members of our OLA family. We are grateful for the joy, energy, and smiles our Kinder students bring to our OLA community every single day!

What a special few days we’ve had celebrating our OLA Feast Day. Yesterday we were so proud of our captains, Cameron and Sarah, who led the procession so beautifully after Mass. Our Band, Choir and Senior Dance Crew also shone at the Fiesta, sharing their talents and representing OLA with pride. The celebrations ended with a stunning fireworks display that lit up the sky- enjoyed not just by our school and Parish community, but by families all around the neighbourhood. What a joyful way to celebrate OLA!

What a wonderful Year 2 Assembly we enjoyed on Friday. The students led us in a thoughtful Mary MacKillop liturgy, reminding our community of her powerful message: “Never see a need without doing something about it.” Their reverence and understanding shone through beautifully. We were also treated to an impressive showcase of their learning- from their creative artworks, where students proudly shared the ideas and techniques behind their pieces, to their growing geography knowledge, confidently naming and explaining the continents they’ve been studying. Year 2 students and teachers, thank you for sharing your faith, creativity, and curiosity with us. Your learning continues to inspire our whole school community. Thank you to the parents and families who joined us for this assembly!

Today we celebrate and appreciate Mr Calabria on Principal's Day- a leader who brings warmth, care and joy to our OLA community every single day. He ensures our school is a place where everyone feels safe, happy and supported, and where each day is filled with faith, fun and learning. At our assembly, the students shared a beautiful acrostic poem they had written to show just how thankful they are for him. Their words reflected the positivity he brings to our school. Mr Calabria knows our students, supports our teachers, welcomes our families, and helps make OLA a place where everyone belongs. On behalf of our students, teachers, parents, and the whole OLA community, we thank him for who he is and for all he does. We are truly grateful!

Yesterday our Kindergarten students went on their very first excursion to Calmsley Hill City Farm- and what a day it was! The children loved all the hands‑on experiences, meeting the animals, watching the farm shows, and of course, the biggest highlight… the tractor ride! A huge thank you to our wonderful teachers for organising it and our parent helpers for joining us and making the day so special.

Last Friday, our Stage 3 Girls and Boys teams travelled to The Kingsway at St Mary’s for the Parramatta Diocesan Touch Football Gala Day. We were so proud of all our OLA students who displayed great sportsmanship, fantastic footy, and outstanding teamwork. Congratulations to both boys' teams finishing 2nd overall, and our girls' team who finished at the top of their pool and were awarded the medals. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day, and Mrs Batten and Mr Campbell for attending.

Our Kindergarten students kicked off their new Religious Education unit on celebrations and community by hosting a birthday party for their teachers’ special teddies! They played fun party games, danced together, and shared lots of laughs. They finished the celebration by enjoying lunch with their Year 6 buddies. It was a special way to explore how celebrations bring people together, create a sense of belonging and strengthen community.
